SUPERINTENDENT REPORTS

 

                                        Superintendent Ed Koledo updated the Board how he is keeping the district and community

                                        informed on the H1N1 flu.  Mr. Koledo indicated doctors are not testing for the virus

                                        anymore, but treating all cases as H1N1.  He stated students and staff understand the

                                        seriousness and continue proper hand washing techniques and cleaning procedures. 

                                        Linden’s absentee rate has been around 5-15%.

 

                                        Mr. Koledo congratulated the marching band on the third 1st place finish in the Durand

                                        Invitational.  The band is ranked 5th in the state and will compete in the state finals at 11:10

                                        a.m. on November 7th at Ford Field.

 

                                        The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams qualified for state finals.  They will compete on

                                        November 7th at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan.

 

                                        The varsity football team defeated Bangor John Glen and will play Mt. Pleasant on November

                                        7th at 1:00 in Linden.  Linden has been nominated for the football game of the week by NBC

                                        25.  Mr. Koledo stated that Ms. North has heard from several coaches in the area about the

                                        outstanding field conditions in Linden.

 

Argentine Parks and Recreation Master Plan is being reviewed.  The Township is looking for public input in reviewing the plan.  The meeting will take place on November 19th at the Argentine Township Hall.  If unable to attend, there is a survey on the township website www.argentinetownship.com.

                                               

STUDENT BOARD REPORTS

 

                                        Sylvan Edwards reported a Metro League Student Council meeting will be held at Clio on

                                        Tuesday, November 10.

 

                                        Student Council is hosting a Senior Citizens Dinner at the high school.  The high school choir

                                        will perform.

 

                                        Over 200 students showed up in costume at 5:30 a.m., Friday, October 30th for the Channel 12

                                        School Spirit Squad assembly.  Over 10,000 lbs. of food was collected for the Genesee County

                                        Food Bank.

 

                                        Ms. Edwards stated the high school students would be doing another canned food drive for

                                        Christmas Express.

 

                                        Student Council is doing a recycling program in the high school.  Andy Leyder is part of the

                                        Green Team.  Recycling bins are needed.  Mr. Rossow offered the bins used by the Little

                                        League.

 

                                        The National Honor Society will conducting a Frisbee tournament fundraiser as part of a

                                        canned food drive.

Board Curriculum     Mr. Koledo stated he would like to start up the Board Curriculum Committee for this school Committee   year.  Board President Starrs can appoint three board members to serve on the committee.  Discussion         Dates for the committee will be determined.  Mrs. Starrs asked if the Board would have any

                                        objections to having a community member serve on the committee.  There were no objections. 

                                        Contact Mrs. Jensen if you are interested in serving on this committee.

 

ARRA Positions        Mr. Koledo shared information on positions created using the American Recovery and

                                        Reinvestment Act (ARRA) money.  The funding will be good for two years.  Three of those

positions are a District Behavioral Interventionist, District Teacher Consultant and an At Risk Primary Project Counselor.  The district is looking at better ways to do things for students by training staff.  These positions will be placed on the November 18th agenda under Old Business for approval.

 

GISD Contracted       Mike Engelter, assistant superintendent, shared information with the Board on contracting Services for  with the Genesee Intermediate School District for before and/or after school activities.  This Before/After position would be funding through the GISD with Title I/ARRA stimulus dollars.  This item  School Programs                will be placed on the November 18th agenda under Old Business for approval.

 

                                        Public Comments:

 

                                        Meg Walton, high school teacher, stated that while it is great to have all these programs

                                        funded, we don’t want to get ourselves locked into programs we may not be able to sustain.

 

POLICY REVIEW

 

First Reading/           The Board conducted a first reading on revisions to Policy 5320-Immunizations suggested by Revisions to                                        NEOLA.  Superintendent Koledo will look at language in other districts on providing

Policy 5320 -               information on various health issues to students in grades 6, 9 and 12.  This item will be Immunizations                                        placed on the November 18th agenda under Old Business for either further discussion or a

                                        second reading and adoption.

 

First Reading/           The Board conducted a first reading on revisions to Bylaw 0144.3-Conflict of Interest Revisions to                                        suggested by NEOLA.  The revision states a board member may be appointed as a volunteer Bylaw-0144.3                                        coach or supervisor of an extra-curricular activity by meeting conditions set forth in the

                                        bylaw.  This item will be placed on the November 18th agenda under Old Business for a

                                        second reading and adoption.

 

First Reading of         The Board conducted a first reading of new Policy 8315-Information Management.  This

New Policy 8315-      policy addresses the maintaining information outside of the Records Retention Schedule and Information                                        Litigation Hold procedures.  This item will be placed on the December 2nd agenda for a

Management               second reading.  Because this is a new policy, it takes three readings before adoption.

 

First Reading of         The Board conducted a first reading of new Policy 8470-Students Sex Offender Registry;

New Policy 8470-      Criminal Convictions.  This policy addresses what precautions the district will take if there is Students – Sex                                         a student who is on the sex offender registry.  This item will be placed on the December 2nd Offender Registry                                        agenda for a second reading.  Because this is a new policy, it takes three readings before Criminal                                         adoption.

BOARD REPORTS/RECOMMENDATIONS/ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Steve Murphy attended the Channel 12 Pep Rally.  The volleyball season ended.  Mr. Murphy stated they had a decent year and the future looks stronger for Linden volleyball.  Mr. Murphy wished all teams going to state playoffs the best of luck.

 

Laura Starrs attended the Athletic Boosters meeting and the Channel 12 Spirit Cup competition.  Mrs. Starrs stated the Spirit Cup was awesome with a great turnout of students.
