Roll Call
Members present: Vickie Luoma, Jim Thompson, Mae
Zion, Julie Brown, Sue Smith, Sandy Harwood, Patti Buchanan, Penny Callard and
Sandy Petersen
C. Topics to be Discussed
1.
Topic:
Review / approve videos for use with middle school Reproductive Health curriculum.
Discussion: Elementary
videos were updated last spring. Current
middle school videos while aligned to the curriculum content are dated. The committee wanted to review available
videos seeking more current selections.
Action: Committee
viewed the film, “Puberty Bodies in Progress for Girls and Boys” by Reality
Matters. Moved by Patti Buchanan, second
by Sandy Petersen to approve this video for use in sixth grade, discussion
followed. The committee felt this film
supported the curriculum. The film
focuses on physical changes associated with puberty. It stresses that puberty happens to all
individuals at different times. The
video deals with students feelings in a sensitive manner. The committee approved recommending the use
of this video for sixth grade in an 8 – 0 vote.
The
committee viewed the film, “Deadly Desires” by Discovery Channel. The committee liked the content of the video
as this film focused on taking responsibility for ones actions. It talks about consequences being a result of
choices individuals make. The committee
felt the content of the film was better suited to high school students than
middle school. Moved by Sandy Peterson,
second by Sandy Harwood to approve this video for use at the high school,
discussion followed. The committee
discussed whether to approve this video or wait until we had reviewed others to
determine which videos are best. The
committee decided to vote on approving the use of this video as a choice for
high school teachers. Teachers have not reviewed
this yet. The committee approved
recommending the use of this video for high school students in a 6 -1 vote.
D. Roundtable
A general discussion followed regarding next steps. Vickie reminded the committee that high
school teachers needed to view the second video we reviewed. We then need to hold public hearings allowing
the community to review the videos we are considering. The videos would then be recommended to building
administrators, the DCC committee and the Board education committee before they
go to the full Board for review and approval.
To streamline this process, we will not schedule any public hearings
until after our next committee meeting when we will review two more videos.
Next
meeting is May 11, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. in the high school conference room.
E. Adjournment Vickie Luoma
adjourned the meeting at 2:00 pm.
