Meeting

  1.       Call to Order  Meeting was called to order by Vickie Luoma committee

                                    co-chair at 12:00 pm.

 

 

B.        Roll Call

 

Members present:             Vickie Luoma, Jim Thompson, Sue Smith, Sandy Harwood, Patti Buchanan, and Penny Callard

 

                       

      C.       Topics to be Discussed

 

 

1.                  Topic:  Review / approve videos for use with middle school Reproductive Health curriculum.

 

Discussion:  Elementary videos were updated last spring.  The committee wanted to review available videos seeking more current selections.

 

Action:  Committee viewed the film, “Sexual Harassment” by Sunburst Videos for use with students in grades 5-9.  Moved by Patti Buchanan, second by Jim Thompson to approve this video for use in sixth grade, discussion followed.  The committee felt this film supported the curriculum.  The film focuses on identifying harassment and taking proactive steps to stop it.  The committee approved recommending the use of this video for sixth grade in a 6 – 0 vote.

 

The committee viewed the film, “Sexual Pressures” by Discovery Channel designed for students in grades 6-12.  The committee liked video as it also deals with sexual harassment in content best suited to older adolescents.  We felt the content was suited to students in grades 8 and higher.  The committee approved recommending the use of this video for 8th grade or higher reproductive health classes in a 6 -0 vote.

 

                        2.         Topic:  The committee reviewed the text “Human Genetics Concepts and

                             Application” sixth edition published by McGraw Hill. 

 

                                    Discussion:  The high school genetics curriculum is due for revision according

                                    to the established six year review cycle.  This text has been recommended to

                                    support the revised curriculum.  The course is taught to high school juniors

                                    and seniors.  The curriculum and text have been reviewed and supported by

the high school science department, the building administrators, the District Curriculum Council, and the Board Policy / Program Committee.

 

Action:  This text was approved in a 6-0 vote by the committee for use in our high school genetics course.

 

                        3.         Topic:  Public hearings

 

                                    Discussion:  Vickie will schedule two public hearings to allow the community

                                    an opportunity to review the above listed videos and text before they are

                                    presented to the board for final approval.  Notice will be given to the public

per legal requirements.

 

Action:  The following public hearings have been scheduled for the purpose of reviewing the videos and text described above.

 

                   May 30, 2006    High School Media Center 3:00- 4:30 pm

                   June 7, 2006      High School Media Center 6:30 – 8:00 pm

 

 

 

 

D.        Roundtable A general discussion followed regarding the coming school year.

 Committee members want to keep meetings scheduled from 12:00-2:00 pm.  Tuesday

 or Thursday is the most convenient day for the majority of the committee.  We will

schedule four meetings for the 2006-2007 school year and adjust as necessary to

meet district goals.  Vickie Luoma and Jim Thompson will meet in June to establish

goals for the coming year.
