Central Michigan University Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship

To apply, candidates must complete all of the following to the Scholarship Selection Committee by March 3, 2008

·        Completed scholarship application, typed or printed

·        A persuasive cover letter addressed to the selection committee expressing a desire to receive the scholarship

·        At least one letter of recommendation from a media studies teacher or media employer

·        A copy of the applicant’s print or broadcast work (i.e. clipping from a  student newspaper or other publication, or a broadcast tape)

·        High school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores. Copies must be attached to the application.

·        An essay (no more than two pages double spaced, single sided) on the topic: how I would promote minority excellence and success in print or broadcast journalism.

Miss Hibernia 2008

·        You must be of Irish decent

·        You must be between the ages of 16-22

·        Open to young women, single and never married

·        The official Biographical Form must be completed and submitted with the entry form

·        You must submit a photograph with your entry

·        You must be able to attend the screening interview on Sunday, January 27th at 4:00 P.M. at Kathy’s Restaurant in Flushing

·        You must be able to attend the 2008 pre-St. Patrick’s day Party where Miss Hibernia 2008 will be crowned on Saturday Feb. 16th 2008 at Dom Polski Hall at 3415 N. Linden Rd. (near Pierson Rd.) at 4:00 p.m.

·        Awards: Miss Hibernia 2008 - $1,000 cash scholarship

                          First Runner Up - $500 cash scholarship

                          Second Runner Up - $350 cash scholarship

Prudential Spirit of Community Award

If you've made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1,000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C., next May-by applying for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award! These prestigous awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, have honored more than 75,000 middle level and high school students over the past 12 years solely for their volunteer work.

It's easy to apply:

1. Visit www.prudential.com/spirit or wwwmprincipals.org.prudential, click on the "Apply Now" link, and follow the on-screen instructions.

2. Once your online application, print it out, sign it, and have a parent sign it.

3. Submit your printed application to your school principal or to the head of one these officially designated local organizations: a county 4-H group, Girl Scout council, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA, or Volunteer Center belonging to the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network. They will then select one or more Local Honorees from the applicants in their schools or organizations, and nominate them for state-level judging.

All state level honorees will be announced in February. The top middle level and high school applicant in each state and the District of Columbia, called State Honorees, will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all expense-paid trip with a parent to Washington D.C., next May 3-6. From two to ten runners up in each state, called Distinguished Finalists, will get bronze medallions. Other state-level winners will receive Certificates of Excellence. Finally, ten of the State Honorees will be named Americas top ten youth of the year at a special ceremony in Washington D.C., in early May. These National Honorees are awarded an additional $5,000, gold medallions, crystal trophies and $5,000 grants for the charities of their choice.

RARE Everyday Heroes

·        Graduating senior planning to attend an accredited Michigan college, university or post secondary school.

·        This $2,500 scholarship is not only to encourage ordinary individuals and support higher education in our state, but to encourage more young people in the process of discovering and honoring everyday heroes in the Michigan workplace.

·        In addition to the $2,500 scholarship, each winning senior will be invited to the “Night of Heroes” dinner along with their teacher and their everyday hero, who will be presented the Foundation’s Everyday Hero Award along with this years other recipients.

·        The deadline for entries is February 29th, 2008 with winners announced in May.

 

Sammy 2008

The SAMMY 2008 Award program recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the contigous United States. An athlete from your high school could be one of the 25 winners who will each receive the following:

- A $7,500 college scholarship from the Milk processor Education Program

- An invitation for winners, parents and/or guardians to attend a SAMMY 2008 weekend at the Disney World Complex in Orlando, Florida scheduled for June 2008

- An opportunity to be pictured in a special congratulatory Milk Mustache ad in a June 2008 edition of USA today and other national magazines

Judging of the nominees will be based on five criteria: academic performance(35%), athletic excellence(35%), leadership(15%), community service(10%) and milk experiance(5%). preliminary judging will be conducted by a qualified group of educators and coaches who will select 75 finalists. A panel of celebrity athletes from the Milk Mustache campaign will then choose the 25 winners.
