Dear Employees, Parents, and Students,

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that each year, district workers and building occupants receive notification about asbestos activities such as response actions and inspections. The purpose of this correspondence is to meet those requirements and familiarize you with the asbestos related activities that have been conducted in Linden Community Schools during the last year.

MANAGEMENT PLANS

In 1988, Linden Community Schools has Asbestos Inspections performed in each of its facilities. This information was subsequently included in Asbestos Management Plans. These Management Plans are located in the administrative office of each building and are available to the public for review. A copy of each building management plan is also located in the Administration Building.

SURVEILLANCE ACTIVITIES

The AHERA Regulation requires surveillance of the condition of ACM every six (6) months. Linden Community Schools have been conducting these Periodic Surveillances using trained individuals. After completion, these surveillances are included as part of the building’s Management Plan.

The AHERA Regulation also requires that re-inspections be conducted once every three (3) years. Re-inspections, conducted by Michigan Accredited Asbestos Inspectors, are intended to evaluate the present condition of Asbestos-Containing Materials. Linden Community Schools contracted with Nova Environmental, Inc. to conduct the re-inspections in 2000. A copy of the re-inspections is included in the Management Plan of each building.

ASBESTOS ABATEMENT

Linden Community Schools is planning minor removal of Asbestos-Containing flooring and pipe wrap within its buildings during the summer of 2002.

Any removal projects will be performed by Michigan Licensed Asbestos Abatement Contractors and managed by a licensed environmental company.

Air test will be conducted during and immediately subsequent to removal activities.

All documentation regarding abatement projects will be available for your review in each building file and at the Administration Building.

Questions regarding asbestos removal projects or any asbestos related issues can be addressed by Mr. Greg Vadasz, Director of Operations at (810) 591-7821.
