We, as a team, believe that open
communication is an important and vital part of the successful middle school
experience. So, please help us keep
communication lines open. Let us know
when there are any questions or concerns.
We welcome your calls and e-mails.
You may call our classrooms at any time to leave a message. Our planning
time is from 1:50 pm and 2:30 pm. You can also e-mail us through the
Planner – All students are expected to have their planner in class. They are to write the assignments for each day in the notebook. The planner should go home with the student each night and be available for parent viewing. This is a great tool for the students to get them organized and adjusted to the transition. We would like parents to see it and sign it at the end of every week.
Parent Web – Parent Web is
available through the
Supplies for all classes – notebook paper, pencils, planner. Please send in 2 boxes of
Kleenex at the beginning of the year.
Policy on late work –
Student-Led Conferencing – Students on the Jigsaw Team will hold student-led conferences in lieu of the traditional parent-teacher format. You can expect to receive a personal invitation from your child with the time and dates to share and discuss their work with them. The goals for the students include:
This is an opportunity for you, as a parent, to display a positive interest in your child’s progress, accept your child’s evaluation of his/her accomplishments and provide your child with support and encouragement for his/her work at school. Both you and your child are expected to attend the conference together.
Team Rules –

Volunteers – We need volunteers for special events and projects. Volunteers help us provide things that would be impossible without them. Please be aware that any chaperone/volunteer, no matter the circumstance, must complete an “I Chat” through Linden Schools before an event. This is for the safety of your child, as well as the safety of his or her classmates. No chaperones/volunteers will be accepted without one. If you did not give us your information at the open house, please do so as soon as possible. You can call or email with your name, birth date, and home phone number.
Modified Schedule – The 6th grade will have a modified schedule. This is done to incorporate a time for a study skills class. The schedule is as follows:

Welcome to the Jigsaw Team and to sixth grade Science! You have an exciting year of investigation,
experimentation and collaboration ahead of you.
This year we will begin our journey with The Nature of Matter. From there we will explore Electricity and
Magnetism, Animal Diversity and finally, Ecology.
Science
knowledge is gained in a variety of ways.
Expect reading, labs, journaling, group collaboration, projects and
interactive note taking.
Lastly,
this science class is a place to open your mind to a wide variety of concepts
and ideas. Please give it your all! The more you put into it, the more you will
get out of it. Have fun and enjoy
yourself.
Breakdown of Assignments:
Homework – We will
have homework every Monday and Wednesday.
Homework will consist of concept reinforcement activities and will be
graded based on a points system.
Projects –
Periodically there will be an out of class project assigned in which you will
be responsible for completing on your own.
Instruction sheets and rubrics for these projects will be provided.
Journals – You will be
required to keep a science journal for each chapter. Topics for these journals will be given in
class and they must be turned in with your test to receive credit.
Notes – Notes are
essential to keep yourself organized for study.
We will take notes in a variety of ways, including, two-column notes and
Foldables. Each student will have the
choice on test day whether they would like to use their notes on the test, or
turn them in on test day for extra credit.
Labs – Labs will be
done in class and may or may not be done in groups. These will be graded according to their point
value.
Quizzes and Tests – A
test will follow each chapter.
Missing Assignments:
I know that sometimes we may lose or forget an assignment. This is why the Jigsaw Team offers one OOPS
per marking period. An OOPS may be used
to turn in one missing assignment. Any
other missing assignments will not be credited.
(Except for assignments missed due to absence.)
Rewards and Incentives:
Evaluating your work and improving is very important. Students who consistently show improvement
will be individually rewarded.
A class reward will be given to the class period that has
the fewest number of missing assignments each marking period.
One student each marking period on the Jigsaw Team will
receive the Super Scientist Award.
Student names will be placed in a jar for a variety of reasons. At the end of the marking period one student
will be chosen. To earn your name in the
jar you can:
have no missing
assignments
100% on any test or quiz
participate productively
in class discussions
work cooperatively in
groups
help clean up around the
classroom
teacher’s choice
Extra Credit Options:
Bonus points are always available.
Throughout each book there are Try at Home Mini-Labs. You may do any of these you wish, and
complete the lab sheet that goes with it.
Only quality work will earn extra points. Turn them in at the end of the marking period
