6th Grade Social Studies

Mrs. Coleman

Welcome to Sixth Grade Social Studies!  I am excited for the school year to begin.

I believe that what happens this year will affect your child’s educational future.

They will be introduced to and learn new information about the geography, history, and the culture of the Western Hemisphere.  They will develop an understanding of its Ancient World History and study its contemporary geography.  Students will conduct investigations about past and present global issues, analyze issues and propose plans for the future, and compose civic, persuasive essays using reasoned argument.  The sixth Grade Western Hemisphere study includes North America, Central America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and Russia.  This school year students will use the textbook, People, Places, and Change (Holt, Rinehart, and Winston), and supplementary sources from TCI (Teacher’s Curriculum Institute), and Inspired.

Homework and an agenda for the day will be posted daily in the classroom and on Parent Web.  Grades are based on total points for the marking period.  Homework and assignments are collected at the beginning of the class period.  At the beginning of this school year, if a student has NOT completed their work, parents will receive a Missing Assignment Alert by mail.  Students are to complete the missing assignment, and then show it to their parents. Parents, please sign the Missing Assignment Alert, and then return it and the assignment to me the next day via your child.  Any assignments that are not turned in at the beginning of the class or are received the next day, will receive a lower grade.  Every student will receive one “Oops” per marking period-a one day grace period on a daily assignment (not a major project or test).  Assignments more than one day late will be scored accordingly.

Extra credit may be given to the ENTIRE class from time to time, but students should not rely on it.  For example:  Students, should not approach me two days before a marking period is finished and ask for extra credit because they have just realized their grade.

Absents do occur; however, it is the student’s responsibility for finding out what work or information they missed.  Upon returning to school, students should copy down what they missed from the daily agenda and obtain any missing worksheets from the “While you were out” bin.  Students will have one day to complete missing assignments for each day they were absent.

Communication is very important!  A close home-school relationship needs to exist.  You will be informed on the progress of your child through the planner, progress reports, telephone calls (if necessary), email, and report cards.  My email address is .  The school phone number is 81591-0710.  Also, my personal school phone is 810-591-0746.  Please leave me a voice mail, and I will return your telephone call as soon as possible.

I am looking forward to this school year!  Students will be learning a lot about the Western Hemisphere, current events, and themselves.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Coleman
