6th Grade Social Studies

Mrs. Adams

Welcome to another school year!  This year your child will be introduced to and learn new information about the geography, history, and the culture of the Western Hemisphere.  Students will develop an understanding of its contemporary geography.  Students will conduct investigations about past and present global issues, analyze issues, and propose plans for the future, and compose civic, persuasive essays using reasoned argument.  The sixth grade Western Hemisphere study includes North America, Central America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and Russia.  This school year students will use the textbook, People, Places, and Change (Holt, Rinehart, and Winston) with an online resource that can be accessed from home at go.hrw.com.  Supplementary sources from TCI (Teacher Curriculum Institute) and Inspired will enrich the curriculum.

My homework policy is as follows:

!     Homework and agenda for the day will be posted daily in the classroom and on the Parent Web.

!     Grades are based on a total points for the marking period.

!     All work not completed in class is expected to be completed as homework and ready when class begins the next day.

!     Work not turned in on time will be accepted late, but will receive late credit.

!     Work will NOT be accepted late once the chapter or unit test has been given.

!     Because everyone forgets sometimes, each child will receive one Oops! Pass per trimester.  When an Oops! Pass is stapled to a completed, late assignment; it may still be handed in for full credit.  Oops! Passes are intended for daily work, not projects or tests.

!     Extra credit may be given to the ENTIRE class from time to time, but students should not rely on it.

Absences do occur, however, it is the student’s responsibility for finding out what work or information was missed.  Upon returning to school, students should copy down what they missed from the daily agenda and obtain any missing worksheets from the “Absent Work” bin.  Student will have one day to complete missing assignments for each day they were absent.

Communication is vital!  A close home-school relationship needs to exist.  You will be informed on the progress of your child through the planner, progress reports, telephone calls (if necessary), email, and report cards.  My email is kadams@admin.linden.k12.us.mi. The school phone number is 810-591-0710.  My personal school phone is 810-591-0745.  Please leave a voice mail and I will return your call as soon as possible.
